some eyeshadow basics!

There are beautiful girls everywhere who seem to think there is one way to do eyeshadow (If you are going out to a party, there is more you can do than pile on the dark shadow and eyeliner).  I think these are some exquisite photos of some options of eyelooks that (depending on color choice) can be bold and bonita or subtle and soft.  

before anything: apply eye primer. Creasing eyeshadow aint cute.

eyelook 1: Using two different tones of the same color, apply the lightest color to the lid and blend the darker color upwards from the crease. For an eye-widening look, try blending the darker color from the outer corner of the crease to the middle of center of the crease.

eyelook 2: With a trio of colors, apply the lightest shadow to the entire lid, the medium shade from the outer corner of the lid to the middle of the lid, and the darkest color on the outer corner.  blend blend blend!

eyelook 3:  Repeat the same steps as eyelook one, but try a cool color for the eyelid, and a warm color for the crease.

eyelook 4: This look is especially evident on this model because she has deep set eyes and a pronounced brow bone- however, the eyeshadow increases the depth of the eyes.  Also, matte shadows help achieve this look (something with added sparkle may not show as much contrast.  Start by applying a white matte shadow on the entire lid.  Use a deep gray or black to blend from the outer corner inwards.  Add the dark gray or black to accentuate the crease. For added drama (this look in particular) put to use a deep matte purple and blend from the entire crease upwards to the brow bone.  To highlight, add a lighter purple of lilac directly on the brow bone.  It may be helpful in this case to mimic the shape of the crease of your eye, or mimic the shape of your eyebrow  (it depends upon which illusion you would like to make).

Smoky Blue-and-Pink Winged Eyeshadow: MAC Fuchsia and Frozen White pigments

This is a look that should be multi-faceted and contoured. If you have mono-lids, just draw in the crease along your socket line, above the lid crease. This takes a bit of practice to get even but it looks great!

Step 1: Use a flat brush to pack a black base like MAC Paint Pot in Blackground or elf Duo Cream Shadow in Licorice over the entire lid. At the outer corner, draw in a wing following the angle of the lower lash line. For the Dummies’ Guide version to winged liner, click here.

Step 2: Pack a metallic fuchsia pink to the outer halves of the black base. You can use MAC Fuchsia pigment.

Step 3: The next step requires a specific type of shadow; translucent white with a blue duochrome sheen. MAC Frozen White pigment and I Nuovi Star shadow are both very similar, but the I Nuovi is softer and less sparkly as it’s a pressed shadow.

Step 4: Use a charcoal grey like Urban Decay Gunmetal to run along the top of the wing, along your socket line,  using a pencil brush. Then  smoke out just slightly to prevent unevenness.

Step 5: Apply black liquid liner along the tide line (inner rim of your upper lash line) and also wing out at the outer corner, following the angle of the eyeshadow. The liner runs along half the lash line only, not all the way to the inner corners.

Step 6:  Finish with black mascara, and beige liner along the waterline (I used NARS Rue Bonaparte but Essence has  an affordable beige kajal pencil,  19 All I Want.)

Spring Night: Smoky Duochrome Eye (all drugstore products!)

A smoky eye and false lashes do not necessarily mean a heavy look if you layer on some shine and subtle color.

Here, I used:

• elf Black Licorice cream shadow duo (black shade)
• Wet n Wild ColorIcon in Greed (sparkly black and gray-gold shade)
• Essence Colour & Shine eyeshadow in 03 Wear It (baked sparkly purple)
• Bourjois Liner Pinceau 16 Hour liquid liner in black
• Ardell 120 Demi lashes

Step 1: Apply the black base in an even layer, sheering out above the socket line.

Step 2: Dab the tips of a brush into black shadow and then pack it gently along the lash line. Don’t run this over the entire crease area as you need to leave space for the silver-gold.

Step 3: With the silvery-gold shade in the Wet n Wild palette (or any soft grey you have), run just above the black shadow in a thin strip. You may need to go over a couple of times to build up intensity. Try to keep the color within the socket line.

Step 4: Run a sparkly purple along the socket line, framing the rest of the eye makeup. You can smoke this color out a bit more since it’s the outermost shade.

Step 5: Apply black liquid liner at the base of your upper lashes, and then apply wispy false lashes. To keep the look lighter and more lifted upwards, I’m not applying anything on the bottom lash line. Not even mascara.
